Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a proactive, evidence-based approach to
understanding and changing behaviour, using a set of principles that focus on how behaviour changes are affected by the environment, and how the principles
of learning takes place. Behaviour analysis helps us to understand how behaviour works.
The term behaviour refers to everything that people do. This include skills and actions needed to talk, play, and live.
ABA therapy is based on the science of learning and behaviour. ABA Therapist uses a range of different strategies and techniques that can be used to help children and adults learn new skills and behaviour

Metamorphosis of a butterfly four
separate stages in the life cycle.
· The egg - all butterflies start as very
small eggs, each about the size of a
pin
· Larva/caterpillar – consuming grass,
leaves and plant material.
· Pupa/chrysalis – remarkable
processes take place in the
motionless case.
· Adulthood – Beautiful butterfly
ABA emphasizes the modification of environmental events to change behaviour. Conducting a Functional Behaviour Analysis (FBA), by collecting data, on observable behaviour and analyzing this data establish the possible function or why of a behaviour. Once the variables that are controlling the behaviour have been identified they are modified so that the behaviour increases (social skills) or decrease (inappropriate behaviour).
Like a butterfly, from egg to adulthood, the process of transformation takes place by implementing behaviour modification intervention(s). ABA relies on procedures based on principles of behaviour that have been founded on research, changing socially significant behaviours to meaningful degrees. The individual’s metamorphosis takes place by shaping the desired behaviour, from defining observable, measurable behaviour(s) an egg is produced. Teaching the appropriate behaviours, like any other subject, the individual absorbs the material like the larva. During the pupa stage of rewarding the appropriate behaviour and applying teachable consequences, the process of shaping takes place. The delightful desirable behaviour emerges just as the beautiful butterfly emerges from the cocoon.
· is based on principles of
behaviourism.
· recognizes the importance of
reinforcement in learning.
· is data-driven and focuses on
measurable outcomes.
· is a continuous process of
assessment and intervention.
· is tailored to the needs and
abilities of each individual.
· provides a predictable and
structured environment for
learning.
· is effective in treating a variety of
developmental disorders.
· is a collaborative process between
the therapist, the individual, and their
family.
· helps individuals build positive
relationship with others.
· improves communication and social
skills.
· teaches individuals how to generalize
skills to different context.
· focuses on teaching adaptive
skills for daily living.
· teaches individuals how to self-
monitor and self-regulate their
behaviour.
. empowers individuals to reach their
full potential.
